Wells Fellowship is designed to promote diversity in journalism by helping to create a pipeline of investigative reporters who bring diverse backgrounds, experiences and interests to their work. Winners are chosen by an annual competition.

For the 2021-22 cycle, Type Investigations will provide five Fellows with a $15,000 monthly stipend, plus $5,000 in bonus payments, and access to a Type Investigations editor who will advise them throughout the process of producing their first substantial work of investigative reporting. The one-year fellowship also covers travel and other reporting costs associated with the project and the costs associated with attending the Investigative Reporters and Editors conference, as well as data training through the National Institute of Computer Assisted Reporting. Each fellow will also enjoy access to research resources, legal counsel, professional mentoring, fact-checking, and assistance with story placement and publicity. The fellowship is a one-time educational opportunity and is non-renewable.

Fellows are required to publish or air their projects within one year of the start of the fellowship. Each project produced during the fellowship must appear in a U.S. media outlet. Both freelance and staff reporters may apply, but staffers must submit a letter from their editor agreeing to allow them at least one day per week to work on their fellowship story, and committing to co-publishing their investigation.

The deadline for the 2021 application is Sunday, March 14 at 11:59pm EST. Please submit your application at least an hour prior to the deadline in case you experience technical issues. Late applications will not be accepted. You will be alerted the week of March 29 if your application has been moved along to round two. If your application is selected for round two, you will be asked to provide two letters of recommendation at that time. Fellows will be chosen in mid-May.

Rob Dean Fellowship Program

Searchlight New Mexico, an award-winning investigative news outlet, is looking for informed and enthusiastic editorial interns to report on issues of impact for New Mexico and the greater Southwest. We are dedicated to in-depth public interest journalism that exposes wrongdoing and covers disadvantaged communities across New Mexico and beyond, from cities and suburbs to rural spaces.

1) Current or recent graduate students of Master’s programs in journalism or related fields and 2) Rising seniors or recent college undergraduates interested in pursuing a career in journalism

The internship is based in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Fellows will have the opportunity to support staff reporters and editors on health, criminal justice, tribal affairs and education stories, among other pursuits. Depending on experience, they may also conduct their own reporting. By the end of the internship, fellows will have refined their skills in interviewing, filing open records requests, sourcing, data reporting, story production, engagement reporting — and, of course, narrative writing.

The Rob Dean Emerging Reporters Program is a three-month summer program (May through July) that pays a Santa Fe living wage. It provides interns with enterprise reporting experience and mentoring. Searchlight will consider applicants from two categories. These categories include:Applicants should send an email with a resume, a reporting memo, and two references to fellows@searchlightnm.org. The reporting memo should include a short description of past journalistic work (four paragraphs at most) as well as two strong story pitches related to New Mexico. These stories can fall under any subject—health, criminal justice, tribal affairs, education, immigration, or others.

RTDNF Jacque I. Minnotte Health Reporting Fellowship

This award was created to honor former news director and Medstar executive Jacque Minnotte, who died in 1993. This fellowship recognizes excellence in health or medical television and radio reporting.

RTDNF Vada and Barney Oldfield National Security Reporting Fellowship

Established by the RTDNF Board of Trustees in honor of Vada and Col. Barney Oldfield. Barney and Vada served in WWII and both had illustrious military careers. Barney's long and impressive career included a stint as a Hollywood studio publicist, WWII Army and post-war Air Force public relations officer, author, and lecturer. Col. Oldfield was also a businessman and philanthropist who founded over 40 private foundations including RTDNF. This fellowship is awarded to a reporter or producer in radio or television news engaged covering national defense and security

RTDNF Michele Clark Fellowship

RTDNF's first fellowship is named for Michele Clark, the CBS News correspondent who was killed in a plane crash while on assignment in 1972. This fellowship is awarded to a young, promising minority professional in television or radio news.

RTDNF N.S. Bienstock Fellowship

An award established in 1999 by Richard Leibner and Carole Cooper, the original owners of N.S. Bienstock. Acquired by United Talent Agency in 2014, the firm now known as Bienstock, a UTA Company has been a leading talent agency in news and reality-based programming for more than 50 years and is a long-time member of RTDNA. This award recognizes a promising minority journalist in radio or television news.
In addition to the $2,500 award, winners are invited to attend the RTDNA conference.

RTDNA Pete Wilson Scholarship

The Pete Wilson Journalism Scholarship was established in 2007 to honor the late Pete Wilson, a San Francisco television and radio journalist. The scholarship is granted to a graduate journalism student from the San Francisco Bay area or attending a college or university in the Bay Area who shares Wilson's commitment to ethical, responsible journalism. The Pete Wilson Scholarship is open to both undergraduates and graduate applicants.

The recipient of the Pete Wilson Journalism Scholarship will receive $2,000 and an invitation to the RTDNA conference.
