Take a peek into the mind of a recruiter
Updated: Apr 22
A recruiter and talent evaluator has a certain way of identifying and developing talent. It's an art that is unique to each recruiter. Chip Mahaney, Emerging Talent Leader for The E.W. Scripps Company, discussed how he discovers future rock stars for broadcast and digital content positions.
Why should you meet with a recruiter?
Meeting with a recruiter can help you get your foot in the door. Large media companies, like NBC, CBS, Scripps and TEGNA, rely on their recruiters to find top-notch talent to fill open positions. In the media industry, recruiters often visit journalism schools to host information sessions and interview opportunities for graduating seniors. Some companies, like NBC and Scripps, have fellowship and career programs designed to help new grads enter the job market. Working with a recruiter directly could give you a leg up when applying for post-grad programs or your first job.
What does an 'emerging talent leader' do?
As an Emerging Talent Leader for The E.W. Scripps company, Mahaney's job revolves around building relationships with up and coming college students, early career journalists and high school students to help develop their talent. His team goes out and spends time with college students and their professors and advisors to figure out who these future superstars are going to be.
"My job is trying to develop the next generation of talent for our journalism," Mahaney said.
When should students try to get in touch with a recruiter?
Mahaney emphasized that it is never too early to get in touch with a recruiter. While he may be looking to fill positions within the following few months that you first make contact, and a student doesn't graduate for a few years, that's OK.
"...if you're graduating in 2022, guess what? We should talk because that's the relationships that we build between now and when you really need to go with the job that can make a difference."
